Making hey: Private water tankers are in great demand as water scarcity hits an all-time high during summer.

To solve the problem of water scarcity and encourage conservation of the fast depleting natural resource, the Centre will announce the latest National Water Policy next year, water resources minister Salman Khurshid said on Monday.

Tankers rule the roost in Bommanahalli, as water is supplied only twice a month. Sinking of borewells leading to overexploitation of groundwater has forced the residents of Bommanahalli and its surrounding areas to depend almost solely on water tankers. The State government has released a sum of Rs 30 lakh for solving drinking water problem in Kodagu district. The two assembly constituencies will get Rs 15 lakh each.
