- Santhal Pargana residents cry out for justice

Dumka: Thousands of tribal families across six districts in Santhal Pargana still wait for financial and social justice, decades after several projects have come up on land apparently grabbed from them.

Polio has crippled Ila and has stunted her dreams of becoming a teacher.

But she found a new meaning to her life when she came to the sixth polio surgery camp today organised by a charitable body, Sri Krishna Seva Dham Trust, at Marwari Bhavan in Harmu Road.

Governor Syed Sibtey Razi inaugurated the two-day free camp.

A polio scare was triggered in Dumka after 181 children with deformed limbs arrived in the district from Soraiyahat block last night.

Bharat Jan Andolan founder and former commissioner of the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe Commission, Brahmadeo Sharma, justified the agitation at Kathikund in Dumka.

He said it was wrong on the part of the state government to allow capitalists to start their projects in the rural areas without taking the gram sabha into confidence.

Notwithstanding yesterday

Dumka: Hundreds of people took to the streets today under the banner of Jharkhand Ulgulan Manch in protest against the arrest of a person spearheading a movement opposing the proposed power plant in the area.

The arrest of Hopna Baski, the village head of Amgachhi, agitated residents to such an extent that they squatted on a daylong dharna in the court compound today demanding Baski's immediate release. The members of Jharkhand Ulgulan Manch handed a memorandum to the officials.

Social audit has been started in Santhal Pargana Region of Jharkhand with the introduction of citizen action initiatives in the year 2005.  Till 2006 there had been six numbers social audit cum public hearing in the region that being carried out by citizens initiatives network.

 

Renowned industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal today visited Godda in an attempt to set off acquisition of land for its proposed power plant site at the tribal dominated Sundarpahari block.

Jindal called on deputy commissioner Virendra Kumar Mishra at his office and requested him to help speed up land acquisition.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has proposed to set up a thermal power plant in Jharkhand, reports Navtan Kumar from Ranchi. Raghubar Das, deputy chief minister, who also happens to be in charge of the energy ministry, said a high level team of L&T officials met him this week in this regard.
