The "Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)-2009" has revealed that the standard of school education was not up to the mark in rural India and claimed that 50 per cent of children in these areas were at least three-grade level behind where they need to be.

WITH 96% children of rural India in the age group 6-14 now enrolled in schools, the government appears to have beaten the odds in the numbers game. However, providing quality education to them remains dismal.

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday informed the Supreme Court that the Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act to provide free and compulsory education to children in the age group of 6 to 14 will be enforced in April/May after the Rules were put in place.

The annual Child Census undertaken by the Department of Public Instruction began here on Tuesday.

While the census which began on Wednesday will be conducted in rural areas till Friday, it will be conducted in Kolar city and the taluk headquarters up to Saturday, according to department officials.
