Agartala, Nov 5: The Tripura Government has decided to set-up an elephant reserve in the State to preserve the animal which had nearly disappeared due to large-scale poaching and migration to neighbouring Bangladesh. The latest census has shown that the population of the elephant has gone up from 38 in 2002, when the last census was taken, to 59 now, the State Board for Wild Life said.

In a tragic incident, four elephants including a mother and a calf have died under mysterious circumstances in Nanjangud taluk of Mysore district on Wednesday.

A Cameroon court sentenced a poacher to five years in jail and a hefty fine for killing eight elephants, a government official said on Tuesday.

After a tip-off from villagers, a 23-strong search party of paramilitary gendarmes, government officials and park guards caught Job Akah, 33, with nine elephant tusks and eight tails in a remote village near a national park, the official said.

A wild tusker died due to electrocution when it came in contact with a live BESCOM wire lying low, at Bhoothanahalli near Bannerghatta National Park, on Monday night. The carcass was discovered on Tuesday morning.

Delhi-based NGO will help in mapping corridor of migratory elephants of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

The NGO, which has expertise in drawing routes of elephants with meticulous details, including food habits, would work on the project from January when the migratory season comes to an end.

DEHRA DUN: It was a miraculous escape for Pratap Singh Pundir of Dhalwala near Rishikesh as he took shelter inside his house after being chased by an elephant on Wednesday night. The pachyderm pulled down part of the house before being chased away by villagers.

Similarly, rampaging elephants damaged two more houses, uprooted a hand pump and destroyed crops in Bhattonwala and nearby areas.

BERHAMPUR: Decomposed body of a wild elephant was recovered on Thursday near Sanamundia hill of Dimiria panchayat under Khallikote forest range in Ganjam district.
