PALAKKAD: The government has decided to raise the compensation to the dependants of the people killed in attacks by wild elephants from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh, according to Forest Minister Benoy Viswom.

The Minister said this while speaking to mediapersons at Olavakkode on Friday.

Oct. 1: It had all the elements of human drama - courage, ingenuity, grit and imagination. Except, in this case, in a scene straight out of Jungle Book, a herd of elephants came to the rescue of a calf that fell into a well at Bannerghatta National Park (BNP).

Human-elephant conflict in Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and adjacent areas was studied based on observational methods during the year 1993 to 1996 as a part of project studying the large mammals in the sanctuary. Major animals engaged in crop damage were wild boar and elephant. The animals involved in crop damage were mainly lone males, in the case of elephants and most of the raids were at night.

NALBARI, Sept 30: People of Indo-Bhutan area in Baksa district have to spend sleepless night because of elephant menace since a few days. According to the local residents, a number of wild elephants came down from the dense forest of Into-Bhutan area, in search of crops, as a result of which crops in varying degree, in different places were being destroyed.

Udhagamandalam: A male elephant which was struggling to get out of a mud pit was rescued by a forest team headed by the Tiger Reserve veterinarian Kalaivanan at Ombetta, a part of Kargudi range inside the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on Tuesday.

Enquiries revealed that sometime in the night or early in the morning, the pachyderm which was playing in the mud pit near the Ombetta lake had put one of its tusks under a root.
