NEW DELHI: Expressing shock at Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa rejecting demands for the removal from the Ministry of the Reddy brothers of Bellary, the Left parties on Monday demanded they step down, a CBI probe be ordered into illegal mining and that the Centre stop iron ore export.

UNION law ministry has proposed sweeping powers for the Centre to act against illegal mining. In its suggestions to the group of ministers, the law ministry has said the power to confiscate the property and earnings from illegal mining should be vested with the Centre.

Tea Board of India (TBI) is all set to introduce an exclusive Assam logo in the line of ISI mark to ensure that only quality Assam CTC tea enter the export market.

The Assam logo would be introduced to put in place stringent quality mechanism system for the export market where Assam tea is facing stiff competition from those produced in Kenya and Sri Lanka.

BHUBANESWAR: Minister for Steel and Mines Raghunath Mohanty today said more than 1.42 crore tonne iron ore was exported during 200910 from the State. In a written reply to a question from Santosh Singh Saluja (Cong), Mohanty said besides the exported quantity, over 4.8 crore tonne iron ore was dispatched from different mines to some parts of the State as well as outside.

New Delhi: The steel ministry on Monday called for a complete ban on iron ore export, saying the mineral is a non-renewable resource like coal and petroleum products, and should be preserved.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) today revised the growth forecast for India made in April 2010 by about 75 basis points to 9.5 per cent for calendar year 2010. The Fund, however, retained its forecast for 2011 at 8.5 per cent.

Seeking the Prime Minister's intervention to curb illegal mining, the Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B. S. Yeddyurappa, has called for a ban on export of iron ore on Saturday.

Bangalore: The BJP government has started singing a new tune in the wake of increasing opposition to the illegal mining controversy. Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa told the assembly on Friday that he will request Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to call a meeting of CMs for evolving a political consensus to ban iron ore exports.
