With only seven per cent of Gurgaon under green cover, the State of Haryana is far behind the target of 33 per cent green cover according to national forest policy. Rapid growth of the city has transformed it into a concrete jungle. Limited resources and ineffective polices are also damaging the forest policy of the State.

New Delhi: The alarm bells are ringing right below our feet. Delhi and portions of Rajasthan falling in the National Capital Region (NCR) extract almost double the amount of groundwater recharged every year. The situation is equally bad in NCR parts of Haryana, particularly Gurgaon and Faridabad, which largely depend on groundwater.

After Municipal Corporation of Faridabad, the Gurgaon civic body has also purchased a Rs 65-lakh super suction pump and a dumping tanker to free sewage lines of sludge.

According to Gurgaon municipal commissioner Rajesh Khullar, the machine was first used in Chakkapur village on trial basis. The corporation now plans to clean sewage lines in Feroz Gandhi Colony and Sheetla Mata road soon.

Successive governments, irrespective of political identity, in Haryana have not been keen on mining of major minerals. One of the reasons is that the major minerals are governed by the Central Government rules. These rules provide for a 20-year lease, which is renewable, with a deemed renewal provision.
