1,500 NSS volunteers to plant 20,000 saplings in Karunapuram
The National Service Scheme of Mahatma Gandhi University, in association with Kerala State Biodiversity Board and the Social Forestry Division of Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary has opened a mega camp here as part of the Haritha Gramam Project of the grama panchayat with a view to create a green belt in the areas bordering Tamil Nadu.
Shrinking of core forest area, lack of awareness too are factors
The rising number of man-animal conflicts are caused by commercial cultivation of soft crops in the border areas and human habitation in forest areas, blocking the path taken by wild animals, especially elephants, said Forest Department sources.
KATTAPPANA: The wildfire that destroyed 10 hectares of grasslands in Koottakal and Choriyanthandu areas of the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary was brought under control on Monday by the joint efforts of forest officials, activists of the Eco-Development Committee (EDC) and a Fire and Rescue team from Cheruthoni.
According to official estimates, four hectares at Kootakal and six hectares at Choriyanth
