Reports of a large number of fish dying in a river in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district have raised concerns about the toxicity of the water, particularly as it joins the Teesta river further downs

New Delhi, Oct.12: The Centre today released Rs 120 crore for earthquake-ravaged north Bengal, within 12 hours of Mamata Banerjee requesting a Union home ministry team for Rs 500 crore.

NEW DELHI, 12 OCT: The Centre has released Rs 120 crore to West Bengal for relief and rehabilitation of the victims of last month's devastating earthquake.

Kolkata: Nine days before the temblor struck Sikkim and Bengal on Sunday, Dipak Ghosh, emeritus UGC fellow¸ had an uncanny feeling.

Sunday's earthquake, which left a trail of destruction in Sikkim, has caused massive damage to some structures at two of the five project sites of the 1,200-megawatt hydro-power project in the upper reaches of the Teesta river. It claimed the lives of 16 workers and officials and caused injuries to several workers.

The West Bengal government has asked the Army to assist civil authorities, if needed, in relief and rescue work in Darjeeling and some other North Bengal districts affected by the massive quake tha


According to the draft, India and Bangladesh will share the water in the ratio of 52:48 with India keeping 400 cusec water in store every year. This ratio translates into diversion of 35,000 cusec water to Bangladesh every year, which Banerjee is objecting to. The CM contends that if Bangladesh is given more than 25,000 cusec every year, north Bengal would face a severe water crisis during the summer.

For transmitting the fruits of administration in an effective manner the West Bengal Government is planning to create at least six new districts in the State.
