The PWD in Majuli is planning to construct concrete roads on the island and plant vetiver grass along them to check the perennial problem of flood and erosion.

Vetiver grass, which is native to India and whose roots grow much deeper than the normal grass, is famous for its soil-binding nature.

Artificial floods in Jorhat district have threatened the existence of a tea estate with the garden authorities today appealing to the district administration to bail it out of the crisis.

More than 50 per cent of the 174 hectares of Haru-charai tea estate, 16km from here, has been inundated by floodwaters for the last few days.

Jorhat, June 27: The Majuli island administration will get a big boat (locally called ferry), which will be put to service during floods and will be run as a passenger boat between Majuli and Jorhat at other times.

JORHAT: Floods have again caused havoc in north-west Jorhat as the Sholmora Nahatiya embankment along the southern bank of the Bhogdoi river was washed away at two places this morning. The embankment was broken near the Sholmora Bridge and at Nahatiya area.

The river water entering through the broken parts of the embankment flooded as many as 12 neighbouring villages of Sholmora area.

The flood water of the river Bhogdoi washed away the Sholmora Nahatiya embankment along the southern bank of the river situated in North West Jorhat at two places today around 11-45 am.

The CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology here will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Agricultural Research Development Agency (Arda), Thailand, to carry out joint research for development of the northeastern region.
