Jorhat, Feb. 10: The Central Muga Eri Research and Training Institute (CMERTI) at Lahdoigarh on the eastern outskirts of Jorhat town is undertaking a number of infrastructure development projects to facilitate transfer of know-how to silk farmers and weavers, personnel of the department of sericulture and other non-government organisations.

Jorhat, Jan. 13: In what may be termed as a path-breaking find, a team of researchers from the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI) here, led by Rajib Kumar Borah, claimed to have pinpointed the fungus which causes formation of agarwood, and ultimately, agar oil, used widely in the multi-million dollar global perfume industry.

Jorhat, Jan. 3: The Assam State Transport Corporation has allotted 15 new buses for rural routes across the state as a New Year gift for people living in the remote areas.

The buses will start plying with immediate effect.

The Assam government will launch an exclusive literacy programme for child labourers in the age group of 14 to 17 years in the urban areas tentatively from January.

Chaos in Jorhat town is a common picture during the last few years. Once a planned town Jorhat has now turned out to be a haphazard mix of residential, industrial and commercial zones herein. It is because of the lack of implementation of a new master plan since the last 19 years. The earlier master plan was implemented in 1978.
