Though the change of course of a river is not a new phenomenon, the latest change of course of the mighty Brahmaputra has created a major concern. The mighty river is turning south and it will have an adverse effect on Kaziranga National Park along with Dergaon and Golaghat.

As climate change is a worldwide concern, the tea industry in Assam too is worried about the damage done to the plantation sector, with Jorhat-based Tocklai Experimental Station (TES) having already made some significant revelations in this respect.

JORHAT, Dec 30: Wild elephants destroyed as many as 33 houses of Kankan sapori in Majuli last night. A house was also gutted in fire in the attack. However, no casualty have been reported so far.

JORHAT, Dec 29: One person was injured at Dabur Sapori after the Forest Department chased the herd of wild elephants away from the Jhanjimukh area across the Brahmaputra last night.

Ignorant of the herd

National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), introduced in Jorhat district of Assam in April 2008, has already made much headway in the sphere of employment generation. About 83% people of the district live in rural areas. Job cards have already been issued to more than 50% of rural households.

JORHAT, Dec 14: One Sunu Gowala (30) of Baghdhora line under Cinnamora Tea Estate of Jorhat district was killed in a jumbo attack at around 10.30 pm last night. According to the information, the elephant attacked the man while he was coming out from his house along with a number of villagers to see the jumbos. The herd also damaged as many as fifteen houses of the tea garden in the last two days.

Out of 641.606 km, 426.618 km roads are still incomplete

JORHAT, Nov 26: Wild elephants went on a rampage at the Jhanjimukh area here recently, destroying fields of paddy and gorging on the sheaves of harvested crops.

JORHAT, Nov 18: With the sightings of leopards at various places and one death in different parts of the district, the Forest Department has gone into a tizzy, yesterday. On the other hand, the nights are taken up with warding off a herd of wild elephants making inroads at Northwest Jorhat.
