The State government has released a sum of Rs 1.5 crore for Kodagu district to take up developmental projects in villages selected under first and third phase of Suvarna Gramodaya Yojana, for the year 2010-11.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa had assured to provide a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who were killed in wild elephant attack in Kodagu and also to initiate measures to check the wild elephant menace in the district, said MLA M P Appacchuranjan.
Kodagu District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee members visited Madikeri and Virajpet taluk and inspected progress of Centre funded projects in selected GPs, on Tuesday.
Not everything is rosy in Dubare elephant camp. This has been proved by untimely death of elephants in the camp. Dubare camp was started to tame the elephants that are caught in forest four decades ago. In fact, it is one of the largest elephant camps in Karnataka.
Unfortunately, as the years pass by, the number of elephants are on decline in the camp. At present, the camp has 18 elephants.
