The State government has released a sum of Rs 30 lakh for solving drinking water problem in Kodagu district. The two assembly constituencies will get Rs 15 lakh each.

The State government has given the direction to take measure to solve drinking water woes in the district and dig borewells only in case of emergency.

The government has released an additional sum of Rs 3.35 crore for the ambitious Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). With this, a sum of Rs 22 crore was available for the district during 2010-11.

The State government has released the funds to Gram Panchayats online. Of the available funds, a sum of Rs 12 crore has been utilised so far.

In a drinking water catastrophe, two people have been dead and 17 are ill due to drinking the polluted water in Valagunda Scheduled Tribes Haadi.

Aftermath of the situation has brought a mourning atmosphere in the Haadi with 22 houses in the region having a deserted look.

The Kodagu Zilla Panchayat has submitted a proposal to the government seeking Rs five crore additional sanction for the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), despite the fact that the district is lagging behind in its implementation.

A total of Rs 9.04 crore was sanctioned for the district for the implementation of MGNREGS in 2010-11.

Urging the government to contain wild elephant menace and to announce compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of those who were killed in wild elephant attack, estate labourers under the aegis of United Plantation Workers Union staged a protest in Fort premises on Tuesday.

The plantation workers took out a protest rally in the main streets of the town.
