KOLLAM: A society for the conservation of Sasthamcotta lake will be constituted with the District Panchayat president as chairman and the District Collector as convener.

Heads of various government departments in the district and activists of environmental organisations will also be included in the society.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The first general body meeting and association formation of Thengamom micro watershed under the Peringanadu watershed project in the district, which comes under the National Watershed Development Plan of 2007-12, will be held at Thuttuva Bharanikavu Devi temple auditorium in Pallickal panchayat at 2 pm on Tuesday.

KOLLAM: The Kollam district committee of the Paristhithi-Samrakshana Ekopana Samithi will organise a convention for the protection of Sasthamcotta fresh water lake on May 31 at West Kallada.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Rural Health Mission (Arogya Keralam) has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the Ayurarogyam project which envisages comprehensive geriatric care focussing on one block of Primary Health Centres.

KOLLAM: Unauthorised sand mining from the Ithikkara river has been intensified in the areas of Chathannoor and Pallimon.

The mechanised sand mining by employing workers from other states is posing danger to the environment and the bridges across the river at Ithikkara, Kummallur and Kundumon.

KOLLAM: Poet Sugathakumari will inaugurate the Campus Green Project at Member Sree Narayana Pillai Institute of Management and Technology at Sasthamcotta on Wednesday by planting a sapling. The students of the college have undertaken the project as the first phase of converting Mukundapuram into a `green village.

KOLLAM: District Collector A. Shajahan has directed the Kollam Municipal Corporation authorities to stop the construction activities of the bus stand at Tangasseri utilising the MLA fund. He has forwarded a copy of the directive issued by the Additional Chief Secretary to the Corporation secretary on Thursday evening.

KOLLAM: Tusker Gopalakrishnan, which was killed in a road accident, was cremated on Friday evening in the presence of thousands of grief-stricken devotees and elephant-lovers. The poojaris and devotees of Asramam Sree Krishnaswamy Temple lit the pyre around 5.45 p.m. on the temple premises. It will take three days for the pyre to extinguish.

KOLLAM: The 40-year-old tusker Gopalakrishnan of Asramam Sree Krishnaswamy Temple here, sustained serious injuries when a sand-laden lorry knocked it down in the wee hours of Tuesday. The tusker suffered fractures on both its hind legs.

KOLLAM: The Physics Department of Fathima Mata National College here will organise a seminar on Nanoscience and Technology from March 23 to 25. Seminar convener Prof E.P. Wilson said that the objective of the seminar was to provide an opportunity for the delegates to learn, exchange and interact with new ideas in the areas of synthesis of nanomaterials and their characterisations.
