LUCKNOW: Scanning of the water birds for possible strain of bird flu (H5N1) has started in the state. The effort has been undertaken to discover the virus that causes bird flu and water birds are said to be the potential carriers of the same.

The sanctioning of a pilot project for construction of an embankment at Matmora in Lakhimpur district using the latest geo-fabric technology is a welcome departure from convention. Over the years, the recurring floods and erosion in the State have made it amply clear that the dual menace is unlikely to be contained through ad-hoc, short-term measures.

LUCKNOW: Finally, a lifeline is in sight for the two-and-a-half-year-old stray tiger cub who was sentenced to death by the state forest department
last month. The cub, declared man-eater by the department after it claimed its first human victim in Bara Banki on December 23, now becomes a key figure in a legal battle that is about to unfold here.
