NORTH LAKHIMPUR

Though there was a slight fall in the level of water in major rivers, the overall flood situation in the State remained grim today also with the Brahmaputra flowing above the danger level at three places. The mighty river is flowing above the warning level at three other places and most of its tributaries also are flowing above the warning level at various sites. However, the flood scenario in the river island Majuli was reported this afternoon to be stable.

Terming the State Government as most inefficient in view of the unabated ravages of flood and erosion at Matmora, Majuli and various other places, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) today said it would burn effigies of Water Resources Minister Bharat Narah throughout the State on July 28. In a statement, the AASU said that Narah had indulged in unprecedented corruption, which was at the root of the failure of flood-control measures in the vulnerable areas like Matmora.

Built on the logic of "development', big dams have wreaked havoc on indigenous communities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh with regular flooding. By pursuing predatory development the central and state governments are equally culpable of visiting disaster on the region.

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, July 22: The National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) is witnessing a trouble time here when 4 ward members of 1,3, 4 and 22 wards of Tinthengia gaon panchayat under Karunabari Anchalik panchayat have alleged of massive corruption in the scheme at the implementation phase.
In a complaint lodged at the Deputy Commissioner Lakhimpur, the ward members have also accused the president of the panchayat as the source of corruption and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

In view of devastating floods affecting Lakhimpur district and nearby areas, the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd (NEDFi) with the help of Gramin Mahila Vikash Kendra, a leading NEDFi assisted NGO of the district organised camps in three different locations of the district with close association of the district administration. The DC Dr Jayanta Nalikar also attended one of the camps. Bleaching power, medicine, tarpaulin, sheets, chira, gur, and clothes were distributed among the inmates of the three camps, a press statement said.

Residents of Bihpuria in Lakhimpur district have decided to take the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) authorities to the court. A public meeting, organised by the voluntary organisation Dikrong Upatyaka Suraksha Samiti (DUSS), took the decision yesterday resenting the alleged attempts made by the Central Sector power company to hoodwink the people on release of excess water from the dams of its power projects. The meeting was held at the Bihpuria Girls' High School under the presidentship of Golok Hazarika.
