An advisory to the state forest department has underscored the construction of underpasses or overpasses across railway tracks in the forests of north Bengal to bring down the number of animal deaths, but wildlife experts claimed the proposal was impractical.

SAMBALPUR: There has been a rise in the number of leopards in Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary. As per the tiger census undertaken in the Sanctuary in 2004, there were 21 leopards. However, preliminary reports of the census undertaken from May 3 to May 16 indicate the presence of more than 40 leopards in the Sanctuary.

Five persons have been detained in connection with killing of a female leopard near the Apsara Vihar gate of the Pachmari's Satpura National Park three days ago.
They were detained by the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department officials yesterday, Satpura National Park Deputy Ranger, M Pathak said today.

Like tigers, endangered leopards too are battling for survival with as many as 160 already dead so far since this January in the country against 290 last year.

Mahuva: A leopard caused the death of over 30 sheep and injured 20 more in a village in Mahuva taluka of Bhavnagar district in the wee hours of Tuesday. While the big cat injured and killed 20 sheep, about 40 others reportedly jumped into a nearby well to save themselves.

Udhagamandalam: A leopard and two elephants were found dead in different parts of the Nilgiris on Tuesday.

Rajkot: A man was reportedly killed by a leopard on the steps leading to Girnar shrine in Junagadh on Monday night.

Ahmedabad/Junagadh: Forest department caged two leopards from Veraval in Junagadh and Rajula in Amreli in past 48 hours. One of the big cats died of heat. The big cat that died was a female caught in Savani village near Veraval on Wednesday morning.
