Oxidative stress status and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were studied in blood samples obtained from 61 agricultural workers engaged in spraying organophosphorus (OP) insecticides in the mango plantation, with a minimum work history of one year, in the age range of 12-55 years. Controls were age-matched, unexposed workers, who never had any exposure to OP pesticides.

LUCKNOW: The new tiger census will begin this October. But, a noticeable number of the big cats from the reported count of 2008 census will be missing from the exercise. Reason being that they have either been poached, died in an accident, or fell prey to ailments.

LUCKNOW: Moving ahead with their afforestation drive, LDA officials planted saplings in sector-N of Kanpur Road housing scheme on Friday. As many as 10,000 saplings were planted by the group of LDA officials which included V-C Mukesh Meshram; secretary, M P Mishra and a host of other senior officials.

Farmers now fear that the compensation due to them would get hung up.

LUCKNOW: A crocodile rescued from outskirts of city was handed over to ghariyal rehabilitation centre at Kukrail on Wednesday. The semi-adult female crocodile has already been put in isolation at the centre to come to terms with its new surroundings. The isolation will continue for about 10 days.

The financial irregularities, lack of administrative skills and faulty implementation has caused the State coffers several crores in the financial year ended on March 2008. The implementation of the National Rural Employment Gurantee Scheme(NREGS) was far below that what was expected of it.

Spread over their sanctuary at Girwa river of Katarniaghat the young reptiles must be watchful of every cloud that hovers over, praying `oh rain gods let us grow a little older to swim before you get generous'.

The state government constituted a Rapid Response Team in drought-affected districts to monitor the availability of food and medicines and fodder for animal.

Though the district administration began preparing its action plan to provide relief to the farmers, the weatherman warned that more tough days are ahead as the monsoon is likely to remain subdued at least for a week in the state.

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) may not be known much for going green. But, the nodal agency for constructing memorials carved out of red sandstone, has finally decided to add some green cover to the city.
