KARWAR: While the sand mining and transport lobby is keen to get the Karnataka government to resume the extraction and transportation of sand to Goa, there is resentment from some quarters in Karwar over the resumption of the sand trade to Goa.

Addressing a press conference at the Government Rest House here, Advocate B S Pai warned that residents of Karwar would strongly oppose the resumption of sand supply to Goa.

Hyderabad/New Delhi: Diversified group Lanco Infratech today said it has won a ruling from an Australian court that allows its subsidiary Griffin Coal to revise coal supply pact with Bluewaters Power Station.

The Supreme Court of Western Australia has rejected the plea from Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers Pty Ltd (PCFL) on the issue, according to Lanco. PCFL is locked in a AUD 3.5 billion litigation with Lanco over fuel supplies from Griffin Coal. Lanco had acquired Griffin Coal for about AUD 720 million in February last year.

The vigilance department in Odisha has initiated cases against mine owners in connection with illegal mining. The miners against whom cases have been lodged include ML Rungta (Silijora-Kalamati iron ore & manganse mines), Rungta Mines Ltd (Jajang iron ore & manganese mines), Indrani Patnaik (Unchabali iron ore & manganese mines) and Sirajuddin & Company (iron ore mines). All these mine owners have their leases under Joda circle in Keonjhar district, minister for steel & mines Rajani Kant Singh informed the state assembly in a written reply.

PANJIM: Alleging that the Goa Foundation (GF) had "tarnished their image" in connection with the excess iron ore production case which now stands to be withdrawn, mining firms have written to Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) demanding "compensation".

The 42 mining firms which were accused of excess production by GF, in their reply to the GSPCB, demanded that the show-cause notices issued to them be withdrawn claiming that GF has withdrawn its complaint.

The Orissa High Court has stopped operations by those mines that are operating on deemed renewal. The court has directed not to operate mines on deemed renewal without its permission.

The Odisha High Court has issued notices to the state and union government over the controversial deemed extension clause of Mineral Concession Rule (MCR), 1960, which allows miners to operate their mines even after the lease expiry under special cases.

The High Court, admitting a petition filed by Biswajit Mohanty to strike down the clause, has issued notices to state and union government. It has also issued an interim order saying that miners cannot operate the mines under the deemed extension clause without the leave of the court.

The Karnataka Iron and Steel Manufacturers’ Association (KISMA) on Tuesday urged the State government to expedite the resumption of operations at all ‘A’ category mines, so that the steel industry gets adequate supply of iron ore.

Addressing reporters, KISMA president Vinod Nowal, who is also the CEO of JSW Steel, said the steel industry had been facing a severe shortage of iron ore in the State. Against the total annual requirement of about 35 million tonnes (mt), the industry has been getting 15 mt, he said.

PANJIM: Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) on Monday said that the party always supported and would continue to support legal mining in Goa, even in future.
