Mumbai: The part of the Mithi river that flows under the runway of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport will be widened soon. Announcing this, chief minister Ashok Chavan said that GVK, which manages the Mumbai airport, will have to undertake the work after October 1.

Until five years ago very few people in Mumbai were aware of the Mithi river running through it. Then, in the monsoon of 2005 it flooded, drowning 500 people. With the devastation it erupted into public consciousness, dark and stinking. Ever since the authorities have been trying to revive it. Their latest experiment is putting it on oxygen.

Mumbai Nearly 75 Mumbaiites gathered near Mithi River to participate in the Wild River dance contest. Citizens, who gathered at Vakola nulla, recorded their dance on video cameras. The recordings will be uploaded on the website of International Rivers, a Berkeley-based welfare group working to save the rivers of the world.
