Udhagamandalam: Despite the best possible efforts to contain bush fires in several parts of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, fresh fires which are breaking out are posing a major challenge to wildlife officials. The fires are keeping the officials on their toes.

Udhagamandalam: With dry conditions becoming a source of concern at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near here, a proposal has been sent to the government to close it from February 15.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Wednesday, the Field Director of the Reserve Rajeev K.Srivastava said that if the proposal was approved, the reserve would remain closed till the situation improved.

Udhagamandalam: A meeting of the Tamil Nadu Forest Staff Association, Gudalur and Mudumalai chapters, held at Gudalur on Sunday urged the Government to provide protection to the forest officials associated with the implementation of Project Tiger at Mudumalai and surroundings.

Udhagamandalam: The decision to bring the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary near here under the Project Tiger umbrella cannot be reversed, said Rajeev Kumar Srivastava, Field Director, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, here on Friday.

Speaking to newspersons, he said that those affected by the project will be suitably compensated. To assist their rehabilitation each family has been offered Rs. 10 lakh.

Udhagamandalam: A male elephant which was struggling to get out of a mud pit was rescued by a forest team headed by the Tiger Reserve veterinarian Kalaivanan at Ombetta, a part of Kargudi range inside the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on Tuesday.

Enquiries revealed that sometime in the night or early in the morning, the pachyderm which was playing in the mud pit near the Ombetta lake had put one of its tusks under a root.
