State-run power producer NTPC Ltd’s overseas plans are likely to take a new turn this year. According to sources, work on its Sri Lanka project is likely to start by year- end, while an environmental impact study is going on for its Bangladesh project.

Last year, both NTPC and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) of Sri Lanka had incorporated a joint venture, Trincomalee Power Co, to set up a 2x250 megawatt (Mw) coal-based power project at Sampur in the Trincomalee region. The overall investment of the project was expected to be Rs 3,000 crore.

Though the power utilities have not received any communication in this regard, the supply of additional coal would certainly give some relief by bridging the shortfall to the tune of 8 MU. It may, however, not help in overcoming the power shortage completely.

The Vallur thermal power project, a joint venture project of the erstwhile Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) and the NTPC, should have supplied at least 375 megawatt of electricity to Tamil Nadu nearly two years ago – October 2010. The State should have got another 375 MW from the project in April 2011 and 375 MW more in October 2011.

This was the schedule of the project made public three years ago. In two weeks, it is going to be five years since the formal inauguration of work on the project.
