In what could be the first for the country, the government today said NTPC would be duly compensated for the cancellation of its 600-mega watt (Mw) hydropower project at Loharinag Pala in Uttarakhand. The compensation could run into Rs 1,000 crore.

LUCKNOW: The Union Minister of State for Coal, Sri Prakash Jaiswal, has regretted the Uttar Pradesh Government's silence on the proposal for setting up two mega power plants by Central public sector undertakings in the State. The power plants to be developed by Nevyeli Lignite and National Thermal Power Corporation have been proposed at Ghatampur (1,000 mega watt) and Bilhaur (2,000 mw).

NEW DELHI: Faced with a wave of religious sentiment about the Ganga, as well as activists clamouring about environment damage, the government has reversed its position on the Loharinag Pala hydel project.

THE government may amend its gas allocation policy to get around the rule that state-owned companies cannot start project before securing fuel linkage, allowing NTPC to start work on its numerous stranded power plants.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) has denied approval for NTPC's 261-MW Rupsiabagar-Khasiyabara hydro-electric project in Pithoragarh district stating that it was being set up in a highly ecologically sensitive wildlife habitat.

NEW DELHI: NTPC has dumped the proposed 4,000 MW mega power project in Bundelkhand in Uttar Pardesh and instead has opted to put up the plant in Madhya Pradesh due to reported refusal of the Uttar Pradesh Government to cooperate in setting up the plant.
