New Delhi: State-run generation utility NTPC, which has coal-and-gas-fired plants, has entered into a preliminary agreement with Bhutan government to construct a 600 mw reservoir-based hydel project on the Amo Chhu river in the neighbouring country as part of its plans to expand into hydel sector.

Loss of livelihood and displacement has become a recurring feature for the people of Singrauli, on the border of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, due to the construction of dams and power and mining projects over the last five decades. These communities are again in the process of being displaced with private players setting up five super thermal power and three mining projects in the area.

A USD 500 million joint venture of Sri Lanka-India for the construction of a coal power plant will commence in Sampur, Trincomalee on November 10, Power and Energy Ministry revealed.

Sri Lanka is planning to sign a commercial and power-purchasing agreement with India's National Thermal Power Corporation to build a $500 million coal power plant in the East.

The Power and Energy Ministry announced on Wednesday that it will sign the agreement next week to build the 1,000 MW, coal power plant in Trincomalee.
