The NTPC has finally submitted a proposal for the diversion of additional 124 hectares of land falling in the Majathal Wildlife Sanctuary for its 800 MW Kol Dam Project, following a tough stand by the state government.

Earlier, the NTPC had obtained the permission for merely 954 hectares of land, while conveniently excluding the protected area falling in the wildlife sanctuary. With nearly 46,000 trees of various broad leaf species, its net present value (NPV) was estimated at Rs 56 crore now.

BHUBANESWAR: Energy Minister Surya Narayan Patro on Thursday announced in the Assembly that electrification of all villages and hamlets in the State will be completed by the Eleventh Five- Year Plan.

To a question from Arun Kumar Sahu of BJD, the Minister said 18,017 villages and 48,172 hamlets are without electricity. Out of this, 26 villages were given electricity under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkaran Yojana (RGGVY).

Besides, 1,629 villages/ hamlets were electrified under the Biju Gram Jyoti Yojana.

Yet power sector does not have prescribed coal stock: Junior coal minister

New Delhi, August 12: Maintaining that public sector behemoth Coal India Limited (CIL) has been supplying coal adequately to state-run thermal power units and the power sector crying foul on coal shortage was uncalled for, the coal ministry today decided to take up the issue of reported paucity of coal with the power ministry. The coal ministry will also seek a directive to NTPC to plant its requirements in advance and spell out the same wellin time.
