Noise is the permanent background score to life in bustling cities and towns. But when it exceeds a threshold, it disrupts the thought process and causes great annoyance. The World Health Organisation says it also affects health. Prolonged exposure to noise at particular levels can lead to hypertension.

Mumbai By September, Mumbai, along with six other cities, is scheduled to get a noise monitoring network. The Centre will install 10 stations across the city and record decibel levels on a regular and systematic basis. This is part of the latest amendments to the Noise Pollution (regulation and control) Rules, 2000, which the Ministry of Environment and Forest released on January 11.

Residential areas along major roads in the Capital are enduring extreme noise levels with most of them reporting 20 to 25 per cent more than the permissible limit, says a study by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

NEARLY 10 years after the noise pollution regulation was notified, the government has decided to put in a place a mechanism to systematically monitor noise.

These rules may be called the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) (Amendment) Rules, 2010. They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.
