After hearing a batch of petitions filed by local residents, patients and the hospitals authorities in south Delhi, seeking a direction to the Union government to take effective steps to reduce noise pollution, the high court on Thursday directed the DGCA to bring noise levels in and around Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport as per the international standards.

As the Delhi High Court provided a six-month relief to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) by lifting the ban on use of new runway (29-11) at night, the IGI Airport authorities have drawn up plans to reduce noise pollution caused at the runway.

The Delhi high court on Wednesday asked the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to take "immediate measures" to control the noise pollu- tion level to lessen the suf- fering of the people living in the area near the runway.

Noise levels have been monitored at selected locations of Delhi and Roorkee, viz. Rithala (Delhi), Panchsheel Enclave (Delhi), New Friends Colony (NH-2 Delhi) and Gurudwara (NH-73, Roorkee) along with observations of traffic volume, speeds and other geometrical parameters.
