CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has ordered a ban on mechanised sand mining in the Palar and Tamiraparani rivers.
Mr. Karunanidhi ordered the ban after a detailed review of works of the Public Works Department at the Secretariat on Thursday. He was informed of the large-scale and unsustainable sand mining in these rivers.

VELLORE: Collector C. Rajendran has directed officials of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to immediately visit the places in the Ambur area where there were complaints of tanneries discharging untreated effluents into the Palar, and identify and close such tanneries.

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has modified its earlier direction to the authorities not to use any machinery for sand quarrying in Palar river bed in some villages in Kancheepuram and Tiruvannamalai districts.
MODIFYING its earlier order, a division bench of the Madras High Court on Friday permitted the contractors of the State PWD department to use machineries for quarrying sand from Palar river in Kancheepuram and Tiru- vannamalai districts with the ap- proval of the authorities con- cerned.
