The ongoing year is inching closer to an end but the passing year would be not be a memorable one for the major big cat conservation projects in the State. This year, the State Forest Department had to face the ignominy and all round criticism for wipeout of tigers from Panna.

The effort of Madhya Pradesh forest officials to catch the elusive tiger, which had deserted Panna National Park last month, is still on. The big cat was spotted at the Taradehi forest in Damoh district on Thursday. For almost a month, the forest officials have been keeping a round-the-clock vigil to trace the tiger.

The straying feline, which had deserted the Panna National Park around a fortnight ago, might now be put in confinement shortly. The Central Government has reportedly directed the State to keep the tiger inside the enclosure till it gets acclimatised to the park. However, the recent goof up has certainly exposed the botched up translocation process adopted by the State Forest Department.

There are currently two tigresses in Panna, both have been relocated there from neighbouring reserves.

Seven months after two tigresses were shifted to Panna, Madhya Pradesh forest officials have finally found a suitable tiger in the Pench reserve to be translocated to Panna.

The forest officials had identified a tiger in Bandhavgarh recently but the translocation was stopped when experts warned that it could belong to the same gene pool as one of the tigresses shifted in March.
