Fires are raging on a daily basis in the forests of Kerala as major rivers, freshwater lakes and ponds have begun to dry up at the very start of the summer. Weathermen are warning that the heat could get more intense in the coming days and rains are unlikely immediately.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The direct treatment of water in the Njunangar stream, a tributary of the Pampa, using ferrous chloride has kicked up a controversy.

SABARIMALA: The Assembly Committee on Environment has suggested a total ban on bottled drinking water at Sabarimala. The Committee felt the need for complete ban on bottled water owing to the environment pollution caused by plastic waste, especially the heap of plastic bottles found on the trekking path, Pampa and Sannidhanam.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The 600-odd families of Kandamkeri at Chumathra are up in arms against the proposal to set up a waste treatment plant there by the Tiruvalla municipality.

PATHANAMTHITTA: An ambitious programme of planting one crore saplings in the district for the next two years is now underway.

The Forest Department in association with the Local Self-Government Department would implement the programme, Assistant Conservator of Forests (Social forestry) B Shyam said.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The first general body meeting and association formation of Thengamom micro watershed under the Peringanadu watershed project in the district, which comes under the National Watershed Development Plan of 2007-12, will be held at Thuttuva Bharanikavu Devi temple auditorium in Pallickal panchayat at 2 pm on Tuesday.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The illegal quarry functioning in Thannithode panchayat near Konni is posing danger to hundreds of people.

Located in the 8th ward of Thannithode panchayat, the land in which the illegal quarrying is carried out falls under the restricted category of the Forest Department .
