A year after the Nuclear Suppliers

Iran agreed in talks with the United States and other major powers to open its newly revealed uranium enrichment plant near Qom to international inspection in the next two weeks and to send most of its openly declared enriched uranium to Russia to be turned into fuel for a small reactor that produces medical isotopes, senior American and other Western officials said.

India today found an unexpected supporter from Mohammed ElBaradei chief of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in its opposition to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT).

In an interview to a private television channel, he said he did not expect India to sign the NPT but felt the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty could be more acceptable to New Delhi.

The International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament seeks to contribute to the global effort to help build a new momentum to reconsider the role of nuclear weapons in international relations and eventually to eliminate them.

INDIA is closely monitoring a draft Security Council resolution moved by the US, asking non-NPT countries to sign the treaty. The draft resolution, which has been circulated by the US, asks signatories to cooperate to rid the world of nuclear weapons and asks countries out of the loop to sign the treaty. Though the resolution is aimed at North Korea and Iran, India is likely to feel some heat.

New Delhi: The Obama administration will honour the Indo-US nuclear deal, in letter and spirit. Dispelling all misgivings, US secretary of state Hillary Clinton on Monday promised not to block transfer of nuclear technology to India, nor deny enrichment and reprocessing technology (ENR) to India.
