ADB approves Rs 967 cr road projects for Phailin hit regions
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved Rs 966.75 crore for 484 new road projects to be implemented across 14 districts of Odisha hit by tropical cyclone Phailin and subsequent floods.

The Centre on Sunday announced an assistance of Rs 915-crore for reconstruction of areas affected by cyclone Phailin and subsequent floods in Odisha, and rehabilitation of victims.

The severe cyclone storm "Phailin" that hit the coast of Odisha on October 12, 2013, brought with it very high speed winds and heavy rainfall that caused extensive damages particularly to houses, standing crops, power and communication infrastructure in the coastal districts of the state.

Recent cyclones Phailin and Helen have severely hit the earnings of coconut growers in coastal districts like Srikakulam, East and West Godavari and Krishna. The two cyclones destroyed more than 110,000 coconut trees, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 3.30 crore, according to government officials. Besides, crowns of thousands of coconut trees were damaged by heavy winds and now it would take more than a year for them to reach normal production. On average, a tree gives 300 nuts per year.

Several districts, particularly those in south Odisha, have been put on alert because of approaching severe cyclonic storm Lehar, that is expected to have landfall near Kakinada in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on November 28th.
