The unfortunate death of a wounded and abandoned elephant calf has prompted the forest department to consider a rescue and rehabilitation centre for ailing wild animals in East Singhbhum.

The department will soon send a proposal to the Union forest and environment ministry. The facility is likely to come up at the forest theme park in Ghorabandha.

Till Friday, it preyed on 80. Within 72 hours, the count has jumped to 400.

Diarrhoea, which reared its head in Potka, East Singhbhum, last week is stalking as many as 15 villages in the block, where at least 100 have been hospitalised.

Unconfirmed reports say six villagers have already died of the disease, but the district administration has denied the claim.

Eighty people were affected over the past 24 hours as diarrhoea gripped villages in Potka block of East Singhbhum. Of them, 50 have been admitted to various hospitals in Jamshedpur, Jadugora and Ghatshila.

East Singhbhum has adopted the Unicef-sponsored Integrated Village Planning Process (IVPP) plan and has set up district planning and monitoring units (DPMU) for smooth implementation of the programme.

Prevention better

Jamshedpur, May 24: The malaria prevention programme in East Singhbhum has hit twin hurdles.

With the monsoon nearly here, the district has failed to start spraying DDT and has run short of malaria medicines. Officials in the district health department maintain that the prevention programme should have begun by now. The district happens to be malaria-prone zone.
