After releasing 48,000 electricity connections till November during the current financial year, the Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam on Monday decided to release 15,569 new agricultural power connections till March 31, 2009.

BHUBANESWAR: Energy Minister Surya Narayan Patro on Thursday announced in the Assembly that electrification of all villages and hamlets in the State will be completed by the Eleventh Five- Year Plan.

To a question from Arun Kumar Sahu of BJD, the Minister said 18,017 villages and 48,172 hamlets are without electricity. Out of this, 26 villages were given electricity under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutkaran Yojana (RGGVY).

Besides, 1,629 villages/ hamlets were electrified under the Biju Gram Jyoti Yojana.

Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beig today said that government was committed to provide basic amenities to the people especially in the rural and far-flung areas. He claimed "massive development has taken place in all sectors during the last five and half years and people can make feel the difference on ground". Beig was addressing a largely attended public meeting at Kalaroos in Kupwara today.

The supply of power is highly erratic in India. Even in a state like Maharashtra that claims to be one of the most progressive states, electricity supply is inconsistent. The Union government has promised to supply electricity to all the villages in India by 2012. Will the government be able to keep up its promise, is a moot point.
