Most of the participants, including the project affected people, welcomed the project and asserted that people with vested interest were spreading misconceptions.

State-run Nuclear Power Corporation (NPC) and French nuclear power major Areva would sign two crucial agreements tomorrow for developing a 10,000-Mw nuclear power project at Jaitapur in Maharashtra.

NEW DELHI: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) is understood to have finalised plans to set up a 9-million tonnes refinery in Maharashtra with an investment of around Rs.15,000 crore.

Official sources said the Maharasthra Government had offered land places and the company was in the process of giving a final shape to the proposal.

A public hearing today on the 10,000-Mw nuclear power project in coastal Ratnagiri district witnessed loud protests by villagers.

Mumbai: The state government will hold a public meeting in Jaitapur (in Ratnagiri district) on May 16 to discuss the environmental repercussions of the controversial nuclear power project proposed for the town.

The Union environment ministry will take into account the suggestions and objections raised in the meeting before giving clearance to the project.

Mumbai: The government has been claiming a load-shedding free Maharashtra by 2012, but the provision in the budget indicates otherwise.

Three of its major power generation plants, with consolidated generation of more than 4,000mw, are expected to be commissioned not before 2014-15, the budget document states.
