Shillong, Oct. 8: Meghalaya is all set to have a wool bank where due weightage will be given to sheep and angora rabbit rearing.

SHILLONG, Oct 5 – Meghalaya today approved the much-anticipated Mining policy, incorporating the age-old, but, controversial practice of rat-hole mining, fearing “war” from local miners.

SHILLONG: Despite the government initiating several measures to curb the menace of tobacco and other allied products, the tobacco consumption is increasing every year in the State.

“The scenario in Shillong is very bad as far as tobacco consumption is concerned and as per reports Meghalaya is ranked third among the north eastern states with over 65 per cent of tobacco users”, President of the Rotary Club of Orchid City Dr C Varghese said.

Plans to install 4180 LEDs,
CFLs across Shillong city

SHILLONG: The Urban Affairs department is currently in the process of identifying locations for installation of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) in the city. It may be mentioned that the State Government has mulled to install 4180 street lights to illuminate the city.

Under the Central government’s scheme of Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP), five slums of Shillong have been selected for upgradation.

The selected slums are Mawbah, Demseniong, Lower Mawprem, Pyntohrumkhrah and Kynjatphutbol. Informing this here on Thursday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the total project cost has been estimated Rs 2129.73 lakh of which the Centre’s share will be Rs 1658.05 lakh. The rest will to borne by the state government.
