Siliguri, June 12: Apalchand forest is set to be declared the third habitat for one-horned rhinoceros in the state after Jaldapara and Gorumara.

The forest, 35km from here, has been home to a pair of rhinos for about two years.

Forest minister Hiten Barman had held a meeting with the senior forest officials at Aranya Bhavan in Jalpaiguri on Friday where the matter was discussed.

A Siliguri-based NGO has appealed to the forest department to conduct a survey in the forests of north Bengal to find out the tiger population in the region.

The NGO has said that a separate database would help the forest department understand the future trends of survival among the big cats.

Jalpaiguri, May 19: Over 200 houses were partially or completely destroyed and power and water supplies were disrupted when a storm battered Jalpaiguri town and the adjoining rural areas last night.

Siliguri, May 16: The elephant census conducted last year has revealed that the number of animals in north Bengal has increased by around 200 which foresters said is mainly because of increased vigilance that has reduced poaching.

KOLKATA, 17 NOV: The state forest department is setting up watch towers along the elephant corridor between Siliguri and Alipurduar junction to prevent incidents of elephants being killed by speeding trains.
This comes after the Union ministry of forest and environment directed the department to take steps to prevent jumbo deaths.
