Goa State Pollution Control Board today issued show cause notices to off-shore casino operators to explain how they dispose off garbage and sewage from the vessels.

Sources said that the notices were issued based on discussion witnessed in the recently held session of Goa Assembly where the issue of licences issued to them was hotly debated.

Thousands of banned polythene shopping bags have reappeared, again exposing the people across the country to the threat of severe environmental degradation, because the government is taking no measures against the manufacturing, marketing and use of the bags.

New Delhi: Setting a standard for biodegradable plastic bags for the first time, the Central Pollution Control Board has laid down specifications for such bags in the Capital.

Now, these bags have to be compostable and prescribe to the Bureau of Indian Standard of IS/ISO 17088:2008 for them.

The coastal panchayats though generate garbage in large quantities, in fact, on par with cities, none have acquired a site for garbage treatment and disposal. Many of them are still at the stage of obtaining administrative approvals while others have not even progressed beyond sending proposals to the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).

Besides putting off foreign tourists, the piles of garbage have become a transit point for diseases from animals to men, according to health experts.
