COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation is of the firm view that the menace of non-biodegradable and non-recyclable plastic bags should be eliminated for its waste management programme to be successful.

Mumbai: To ensure better coordination and proper usage of dumping grounds in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), the MMRDA would ask the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) to conduct a study on these grounds.

TIRUCHI: A Rs.70-crore-integrated solid waste management programme has been planned for the Tiruchi Corporation and the Municipalities of Manapparai, Thuvakudi and Kulithalai.

A detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared by Community Consulting India Private Ltd, a consultant commissioned by the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Ltd (TNUIFSL).

TIRUCHI: A huge volume of banned plastic cups and bags, below the thickness of 20 microns, was seized during a special drive conducted by the Corporation officials over the past two days in the city.

The Corporation has banned the use, sale and manufacture of plastic products below the thickness of 20 microns. The ban applies to plastic bags, cups/tumblers and plastic coated plates.

In yet another initiative at resolving the garbage imbroglio, the State Government has decided to set up Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation (GSWMC) on the lines of Karnataka Solid Waste Management Corporation.

COIMBATORE: After trying it out in six colonies in the city, ITC Limited looks set to tie up with five corporations (three in Tamil Nadu and two in Kerala) to expand its Wealth Out of Waste programme, under which it pays for paper waste collected from houses.

IEREED (Institute for Enviornment Research Entrepreneurship Education and Development) India carried out a hi-tech campaign to remove pollution on the ocassion of Shivratri. The Non-Government Organisation sent out SMS and e-mails to people urging them to abstain from the use of polythene on the ocassion.

Chandigarh: The machines installed at the Solid Waste Management Plant in Dadumajra are not those as were demonstrated by the Germany firm from whom they were bought. There are some machines that were not part of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). The sub-committee constituted to look into the functioning of the plant has pointed out these and numerous other anomalies at the plant.

Goa State Pollution Control Board today issued show cause notices to off-shore casino operators to explain how they dispose off garbage and sewage from the vessels.

Sources said that the notices were issued based on discussion witnessed in the recently held session of Goa Assembly where the issue of licences issued to them was hotly debated.
