THE Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Chennai Corporation to ensure that no solid waste was dumped in the Pallikaranai marshland.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla granted the injunction while passing interim orders on a public interest writ petition of California Software Company Limited.

Solid waste management (SWM) is one of the most neglected aspects of India's environment and the recent Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000 have made it mandatory for the administrative authority of any area to undertake responsibility for all activities relating to municipal solid waste management (MSWM).

The recent trends of increasing awareness of economic and environmental cost of conventional landfilling are being developed in accelerating pace for the degradation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW).

This study reveals detailed geochemical investigation of inorganic constituents including heavy metals in the ground water surrounding the dumpsite area at Muzaffarpur. The pH was found to be increased in some cases. Few water samples showed the total hardness and alkalinity value beyond the standard limit. COD value was found to be maximum in nearest points to dump sites.

Ropar: The Ambuja Cement plant is utilising biomass for its captive power plant at the unit. Use of biomass has brought respite for villagers around, who find it difficult to manage agriculture waste and stock it.
