Public Forum : Drowning In Garbage

Take a look at the desperate state of our national capital engulfed as it is by trash. Just a few days back lives were lost after the monstrous Ghazipur dump collapsed. It is more than 50 metres high, it is not supposed to be more than 20 metres high; and with no other dump easily available, Delhi stares at a disaster in the making. Why now, in 2017, are we finally waking up to this ridiculous situation? Who is responsible and is there a real solution? We debate on The Buck Stops Here.

It is estimated that Indian health care industry is growing at a rate of 12% per annum. Health care institutions have a very high potential for disease transmission through its waste, in this episode, we focus on the dangers of how toxic biomedical waste is and how unaware people are about its harmful effects. We speak about Swachh Bharat, cleanliness practices that need to be urgently brought to medical institutions to prevent them from becoming a source of disease and how the staff must be trained on handling biomedical waste in keeping with set guidelines.

Waste management is a huge challenge as well as a crisis for our country. Some cities have managed to put in successful waste management systems. The government evolved a new set of waste management rules that mark a significant shift. A survey by Centre for Science and environment has rated cities like Alleppey in Kerela, Panaji, Mysuru, Aizawl, Pune, Suryapet in Telangana and Surat as those that have made a significant leap forward and could become models for the country.

Ranchi, March 22: Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has turned its attention on illegal meat and fish sellers, mobile towers and water connections in the state capital as part of its ongoing anti-encroachment drive.

The municipal corporation has asked roadside meat and fish vendors to wind up shop immediately or face the music.
