House sparrows among birds to take brunt in decline blamed on changes in land use, coastal management and weather

Sudhir Vasudeva, CMD of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), on Tuesday launched the ‘Save the House Sparrow’ campaign to mark the 57th ONGC Day at Tel Bhavan here.

The campaign, initiated by ONGC in association with Action and Research for Conservation in Himalayas (ARCH), a local NGO, aims at the conservation of the dangerously dwindling house sparrow population in the locality and the surrounding region.

GOLAGHAT: Sparrows are disappearing from many parts of the country, especially in Assam, where electro-magnetic radiation from communication towers, use of leaded petrol in vehicles and overuse of chemicals and pesticides in agriculture have been cited as primary causes of their disappearance by scientists.

The chief scientist of the Regional Agriculture Research Centre in Lakhimpur, Dr Prabal Saikia, said, “It is a fact that sparrows are becoming scarce throughout Assam - both house and tree sparrows.

Rajkot: A nationwide netbased survey on house sparrow has been launched by Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Mumbai, from April 1. Bird Conservation Society, Gujarat (BCSG), which is one of the 10 partnering institutions in this two-month long survey, has appealed to the people to contribute their data to this important study. BCSG has been working for the promotion of bird watching as a hobby and creating awareness about the importance of conservation.

Bombay Natural History Society ropes in citizens for online survey

In an effort to document the population and distribution of sparrows and compare it with the situation in the past, nature and conservation organisations across the country have joined efforts with the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) to launch an online survey titled “citizen sparrow”.

A variety of programmes in school and outside are turning the capital’s children into environment-sensitive citizens.
