KOLKATA:Enraged over inadequate supply of relief material, victims of the powerful storm that hit four blocks of the Uttar Dinajpur district of West Bengal little after midnight on Tuesday staged a demonstration before a Sub-Divisional Office and also blocked a State highway for hours before the police dispersed the mob on Friday.

The crop damage caused by tornado that devastated parts of West Bengal and Bihar on Wednesday may amount to Rs 20-25 crore, according to initial estimates.

Malda: A hailstorm wreaked havoc in four blocks of Malda district last night, destroying ripening mangoes and damaging the boro crop.

The hailstorm left Sabera Bibi, 30, dead in a lightning strike at Mandi village near Vaisnabnagar. Her husband suffered severe burn injuries and was admitted to the Malda District Hospital.

PATNA: More than 80,000 homes were destroyed by the tropical storm that ripped through five districts of Bihar, and the death toll rose to 82.

According to the latest reports, five more bodies were recovered in the affected districts. A third of the victims were children, including 17 of the 39 victims in Purnia district and 11 of the 33 killed in Araria.

KOLKATA: The death toll in the tropical storm that ripped through North Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Tuesday night has risen to 42.

Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti told reporters here on Thursday that while 41 bodies were recovered from the debris, one person died of injuries at hospital.
