The Thiruvananthapuram sub-project of the larger Kerala Water Supply Project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is being commissioned on May 18.

PALAKKAD: The government has decided to relax the norms for lifting of Malampuzha sand from its banks. The price is set to come down to Rs 950 a cubic metre if it is for public purpose. The liberalisation of the norms will enable the public to buy the sand directly by paying the price. Currently, the public can lift the sand only if they take it in lots of 10,000 cubic metres.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With 13 cases of malaria being reported from the coastal areas of the district during this month, the Health Department authorities have stepped up the drive against the disease.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While mangroves come under moist tropical forest as per many classifications, the Forest Department has failed to bring the mangroves in the state under its fold. To make matters worse, the incentivebased scheme for mangrove conservation, as announced by Finance Minister Thomas Isaac in his budget speech, is still having teething problems.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central team, which conducted a survey on encroachments in Munnar, has urged the State Government to declare 17,922 acres of land in KDH village as Forest Land. The team observed that there was no hurdle in proclaiming this land as forest land.

The Kerala Government is considering a law to ban genetically modified crops (GM) in order to ensure seed quality and protect traditionally cultivated crops in the State. A Bill in this regard is likely to be presented in the Assembly in its next session.
