Decentralization, local governance, and localizing the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific

This book, explores the crucial role of subnational levels of government in accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific. Subnational governments implement public policies, facilitate partnerships among stakeholders, and act as interlocutors between communities and the state. Many national SDG targets will not be achievable without their full involvement. This volume discusses how to foster an enabling environment to help subnational governments realize their potential in addressing development challenges, and includes analysis of particular country contexts. It highlights the need to strengthen the functionality of multi-level governance systems and the role of subnational government in the provision of public services, and to leverage well-structured and balanced multi-level governance systems.
