LDCs, negotiations and the climate crisis: Will the poorest countries benefit from the COP24 climate package?
The Katowice Climate Conference has come and gone, and a busy 2019 calendar headlined by the UN Secretary-General’s September climate summit is already in full swing. It’s important to not only look back at the developments of 2018 with a focus on the package of outcomes from COP24 but also look forward to the key moments of 2019. This issue paper puts the climate crisis, the prevailing political context and the LDC perspective into frame; it looks at the Katowice package of outcomes and delves into the implementation guidelines adopted at COP24; and it looks at 2019 and beyond regarding opportunities and some reflections. Important context and history of the negotiations and the process are provided where relevant.
