Mainstreaming climate change resilience into development planning in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that by 2050, 17 per cent of Bangladesh will have been claimed by rising seas, forcing 20 million people to relocate. In order to reduce the level of vulnerability the country faces, the government is stepping up its efforts to establish an institutional and legal framework, which is strongly conducive to the mainstreaming of climate change adaptation and mitigation. This paper explains how political will facilitated a climate-resilient development planning process in Bangladesh. In addition, it will provide an introduction to climate financing mechanisms and the development planning process.
