AGRA: Around 100 nilgais have died in Saurai, Agra district, after allegedly drinking the highly contaminated water of the Karvan river.

Panic-stricken villagers, who said the water has turned poisonous due to effluents being discharged by factories in Hathras and Aligarh, added that their heath and crops, too, have been severely affected. One of them said animals have died in the past as well and that "farmers suffer burns to their feet while irrigating the fields because of the toxic water".

Agra: Agra’s petha manufacturing industry is in trouble. The sweetmeat producers have been forced to down shutters because of an initiative to save the Taj Mahal.

Even protests by manufacturers and workers failed to grab the district administration and civic body’s attention. Mini petha units using coal or disposing waste in the Yamuna have been ordered to shut shop.

According to the recent reports of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB), the delayed monsoon showers had increased the pollution in Ganga and the situation would be more grim in winter.

The report presented by the UP Pollution Control Board is enough to give a second thought to the idea of immersing Durga idols in water. As per the report, water at the point from which Ganga is entering in the city, that is Bithoor, is comparatively clear but the river gets polluted further. Jajmau, the last stop of Ganga is most polluted.

As many as 25 new dengue cases were reported on Saturday.
