In the present report, an attempt has been made to review the various methods for assessment of ground water recharge, present perspective of ground water resources assessment in the country and to suggest the future strategies for refinements of the
methodology for assessment of ground water resources.

National Water Policy (2002) states that

The recent guidelines for the withdrawal of ground water especially by the industries and infrastructure units focus on a specific part of ground water management viz. ensuring sustainability of ground water both in terms of quantity & quality and on land based management of ground water resource.

This manual deals with various aspects of artificial recharge of ground water including planning of artificial recharge schemes, artificial recharge techniques and design of structures, monitoring of augmented water levels and water quality, economic evaluation of recharge projects and issues related to operation and maintenance of artificial recharge structures. Roof top rainwater harvesting techniques which are particularly suitable for urban areas have also been included and described in detail.

This report presents the dynamic ground water resources of India based on GEC'97 (Ground Water Exploitation Committee)with base year as 2004. It identifies the areas where ground water development is at low key and the areas, where ground water development is alarmingly high. The estimation for the individual state was jointly done by the Ground Water Wing of the State Govt.
